Quantum Black: The state of AI in 2023

This year’s annual McKinsey Global Survey on the Current State of AI is based on responses from 1,684 respondents across a range of industries, regions, company sizes, as well as areas of expertise, and was conducted from April 11-21, 2023. The results confirm explosive growth of generative AI tools. Less than a year after many of the tools hit the market, one-third of survey participants say their companies regularly use generative AI in at least one business function. In addition, the topic has become the focus of management. Nearly a quarter of C-suite executives surveyed said they use related tools in their work. This underscores the extent to which companies understand and accept that generative AI is viable in business.

The study further shows: Generative AI tools are used most frequently in the “Technology, media and telecommunications” sector on a regular basis for their own work (14%). In this context, regular use is made by 10% of senior managers and 8% of C-suite executives. An analysis by business area shows that generative AI is used primarily in the three areas of marketing & sales, product & service development, and service areas such as customer support. Despite the increased use of generative AI tools, the percentage of companies using other AI tools has remained constant since 2022 (55%). In addition, the deployment is still focused on a small number of functions. For example, only 22% of respondents say they regularly use AI for their own work.
