Beyond the Machine: What Determines Trust in AI

Trust in artificial intelligence is closely linked to trust in social institutions. This is the conclusion of a study published in the journal *AI & Society*, which is based on surveys of 3,235 people.
Trust in Institutions Extends to AI
The study shows that people who trust governments, scientists, and other people more tend to place greater trust in AI as well. These correlations hold even when individual characteristics and attitudes are taken into account. The authors see this as evidence of a “trust transfer effect,” in which the credibility of institutions influences perceptions of new technologies.
AI literacy strengthens trust
One’s own AI expertise also plays a role. People who believe they can understand AI and use it effectively are more likely to trust the technology. This connection is partly driven by optimistic expectations regarding the societal benefits of AI.
