Data and AI Impact Report 2026: Trust, Data, and Governance in the Use of AI

The 2026 Data and AI Impact Report by SAS and IDC examines the role trust plays in the use of AI and the conditions organizations must create to foster that trust.

Agent-based AI requires a robust data foundation

As AI becomes increasingly autonomous, the demands on data quality, traceability, and governance also rise. Agent-based systems can only act reliably if they are built on a robust data foundation and their decisions remain traceable. However, this is precisely where there is still room for improvement. Only 17.5 percent of the organizations surveyed rate their data infrastructure as fully optimized. At the same time, 89 percent already report that AI agents are involved in decision-making processes in some form.

Trust in AI Pays Off

This gap is also evident when it comes to trust. At 66 percent, Agentic AI is perceived as trustworthy less often than GenAI, which stands at 76 percent. The report thus highlights how important robust data, clear governance structures, and transparent decision-making are for trustworthy AI. Another finding shows that these prerequisites can also pay off economically. Organizations with particularly trustworthy AI structures are 15 times more likely to report a strong ROI.
