D21- Digital Index 2024/25

The D21 Digital Index 2024/25 provides a differentiated picture of AI usage in Germany and key findings for communication managers. 25% of the population already use applications such as ChatGPT, while the figure for Generation Z is 68%. Use is concentrated on research, entertainment and text editing. Students and professionals with office jobs are particularly active. However, only 25% of users recognize AI-generated content with confidence – many use the technology without being able to classify how it works or the risks involved.

At the same time, 63% of the populationfeel that they are generally well prepared for the digital transformation. However, the use of AI remains selective: while 60% of people with a higher level of education use AI, only 17% of those with a lower level of education do so. Assessments also vary: 48% of the population see opportunities for personal and professional development in digitalization – this proportion is significantly higher among digitally affine groups.

Only 49% have basic digital skills – a figure that has been stagnating for years. At the same time, 44% trust that search engines only provide reliable information. The index therefore not only shows technological trends, but also correlations between use, trust and critical media skills.
