Edelman Trust Barometer 2025: Trust and the Crisis of Grievance

This year’s Edelman Trust Barometer 2025 once again highlights the great importance of trust as a central currency for companies in an increasingly critical public. While institutions such as the media and governments continue to lose credibility, companies are seen as the only institution that is both competent and ethical. However, this advantage in trust goes hand in hand with high expectations: 85% of respondents believe that companies have a duty to contribute to social stability by providing well-paid jobs and further training.
Germany in particular is experiencing a persistent crisis of trust. With a Trust Index of just 41, the country is one of the worst performers in an international comparison. The government and media continue to lose trust, while companies are seen as comparatively reliable players despite a decline. At the same time, a growing social divide is exacerbating mistrust in institutions.
The study warns of increasing polarization, exacerbated by social dissatisfaction. Technology plays an ambivalent role here: AI is a driver of efficiency and innovation, but at the same time triggers mistrust, especially when used in data-driven processes.
In order to secure trust, companies must do more than traditional communication – they must embody credible values, take responsibility and enter into an authentic dialog with their target groups. The report provides valuable impulses that can help companies to strategically build trust and maintain it in the long term.
