Reuters Institute: Digital News Report 2023
The 12th edition of the Digital News Report is based on data from six continents and 46 markets. For this purpose, an online survey was conducted at the end of January/beginning of February 2023 with approximately 2,000 respondents per market. The report consists of an overall overview, followed by chapters with additional analysis (e.g., attitudes toward algorithms and their impact on news) and contributions on individual countries and markets.
The results show that the structural shift towards a more digital, mobile and platform-dominated media environment has been accelerated by crises such as Covid-19 or the Ukraine war. At the same time, the influence of Google and Meta on access to news has changed. While at its peak nearly half of online traffic was through these platforms, new digital audio and video services like TikTok are now coming into play. For producers, this means an even more complex platform environment characterized by fragmented attention, low trust, and even less open and representative participation. Another finding: much of the public is skeptical of the algorithms used to select what they see via search engines, social media and other platforms. Nevertheless, users still slightly prefer news selected in this way to news selected by editors or journalists. If you want to learn more, you can download the full report for free.
