Reuters Institute Digital News Project: Journalism and Technology Trends and Predictions 2025

Published by the Reuters Institute, the Journalism and Technology Trends and Predictions 2025 report predicts how technological innovations and social dynamics will shape the information and communication landscape based on a survey of 326 media leaders from 51 countries.

While politics and rising expectations of recipients will dominate public discourse, generative AI will revolutionize the creation and personalization of content, optimize editorial processes and open up new formats such as AI-powered audio and video content. At the same time, 74% of respondents fear a decline in search engine traffic due to AI-generated responses from platforms such as ChatGPT and Perplexity. For corporate communications, this will mean making greater use of alternative channels and formats in order to reach target groups effectively.

The increasing importance of influencers and content creators on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram is challenging traditional approaches. Nevertheless, innovations such as personalized content, audio formats and product development will open up new opportunities to raise the quality of content to a higher level and retain target groups in the long term. The report emphasizes that adaptability and the targeted use of new technologies will be crucial in order to remain successful in a fragmented media landscape.
