Reuters Institute: Digital News Report 2024

An absolute must for anyone interested in digitalization and media use! The Digital News Report 2024 from the Reuters Institute once again offers exciting insights into global news usage. The comprehensive study, which was conducted simultaneously in 47 countries, sheds light on current trends and national characteristics.

A central theme of the report is the growing importance of platforms for news consumption and production. Visual social media in particular, such as TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, are playing an increasingly important role. The report also examines audience attitudes towards the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in news. In Germany, 52% of adult internet users have already read or heard a lot or a moderate amount about AI. But skepticism remains high: one in two people feel uncomfortable with news that is mainly produced by AI with only a little human supervision. Interestingly, acceptance increases when AI is merely supportive and human journalists do the majority of the work – 36% of respondents feel comfortable with this.
