Communications Heatmap 2025

Which topics do communications managers need to focus on this year? The Communications Heatmap 2025 by FTI Consulting and Quadriga University Berlin answers this question on the basis of qualitative individual and group interviews with top communicators and a standardized online survey. Profession-specific challenges in the social, political and economic dimensions are highlighted under the keyword Heats.

Five focus topics are covered: Focus A: Strengthening the communication unit, Focus B: Changes in the communication environment, Focus C: Internal communication, Focus D: Disruption of the political environment and Focus E: Increase in market volatility. Focus B, which looks at changes in the communications environment, is particularly interesting for anyone involved in digitalization. Among other things, it looks at how to deal with new gatekeepers, the role of artificial intelligence and the growing importance of digital platforms.

The other focus topics also have an indirect effect on the digital transformation, as many companies see the large number of parallel crises as a key hurdle. 79% of respondents state that they do not have sufficient resources to manage several crises at the same time. 77% see the digital transformation of the communication unit as a major challenge, which primarily requires the expansion of the digital infrastructure and the development of expertise within the team. Governance rules and acceptance of the communication unit within the organization are also high on the agenda. AI is seen as the most important lever for efficiency gains, but at the same time creates pressure to further increase the quality and speed of communication.

Communications departments must therefore continue to expand their digital expertise and data culture, professionalize internal processes and set clear priorities in order to remain capable of acting. This is the only way they can provide orientation and secure the trust of internal and external stakeholders despite the multi-crisis.
